Making scents of it all/Camera Critters

Earlier this fall....
One creature chose to share his scent and the other, unknowingly, accepted it and is now sharing it with others!! Skunked!! ugh!.. good ole tomato juice !ummmm good, ummm good....
ug! maybe I can shake off that smell and that souped up feeling!!
well, I'm souped, de-skunked-shampooed, rinsed, dried and smell okay and I'm not telling them what happens for the next several months when my skin gets wet or damp! whew!! or is it phew!!

I'm waiting for the day when my dogs do this but not looking forward to it. Glad you survived it.

Are you kidding? Tomato juice for skunk smell? Not to familiar with skunks. That's funny.

Tina,

Is your dog a Brittany Spaniel? My friend and former neighbor in Maryland had two of them plus a litter. We loved the breed!

My dogs have never been "skunked", thank goodness. If we lived in a rural place without a fence, I'm sure my Boston Terriers would find a way to take the plunge :o)

Mary, you are right, our dog is a Brittany spaniel. This guy is our 2nd
spaniel, the first (his aunt) just passed last yr and was 16 1/2 yrs old! They are a wonderful family dog... very peppy, though, and energetic! Glad to hear your dogs have escaped this experience..not a good path for the nose to travel!!lol

In case the earlier treatment was not totally successful, try this mixture. We keep all the supplies on hand, just in case. I've heard this is the best de-skunk remedy, better than tomato juice or commercial treatments.

In a plastic (NOT METAL) bucket, mix well the following ingredients:
1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup of baking soda
1 to 2 teaspoons liquid soap (Ivory liquid or Softsoap) Don't use grease-cutting detergents or hair shampoo.
[For very large pets one quart of tepid tap water may be added to enable complete coverage.]
Wash pet promptly and thoroughly, working the solution deep into the fur. Let your nose guide you, leave the solution on about 5 minutes or until the odor is gone. Some heavily oiled areas may require a "rinse and repeat" washing.
Skunks usually aim for the face, but try to keep the solution out of the eyes - it stings. If you have any cuts on your hands you might want to wear latex gloves for the same reason.
After treatment, thoroughly rinse your pet with tepid tap water.
Pour the spent solution down the drain with running water.
NEVER, ever, store mixed solution in a closed bottle, sprayer, etc. Pressure will build up until the container bursts. This can cause severe injury

Oh Tina, that smell is SO hard to get rid of. We have skunks --and during the nights in Summer, sometimes we get a skunk smell throughout our house. YUK! We seldom use AC--so our house is open most of the summer... AND--that is one smell that will wake us up!!!!! Good luck getting your baby 'deskunked.'
Hugs,
Betsy

NC,
THANK YOU so much for sharing your information. I have printed this recipe and will keep it handy! We think he was sprayed on his right front side, so when we bath him I have been using a watered down vinegar solution to try and cut the enzyme on his skin in that area. He hasn't had any bad reactions to this rinse and it seems to have helped. We will definitely try your solution if things don't improve! Thanks again.

Tina: That is so funny, it's not good to play with Mr. Skunk. We had one hit on the road outside of work and it smells every time you drive near.

Ahhhh yes - I know EXACTLY what you are talking about - Maggie May (the puppy) got skunked a while ago and it was bad.

Your dog is absolutely beautiful!
