NOT TOO FAR AWAY...

Saturday brought clouds and lots rain. Anyone that ventured outside had trouble keeping dry.....even this little grey squirrel who did his best to stay down wind looked chilled. With the dawn of Sunday came cool breezes and lots of sunshine. We are now seeing much colder temperatures at night and you can definitely feel that nip in the air.

This morning I noticed these little guys foraging through the leaves that had blown underneath our yews! Several white-throated sparrows found their way to our backyard and were looking for their breakfast as we ate ours. It was nice to see them again as many had wintered with us last year. I know their breeding range is in Canada, and from what I've read, many choose to winter in the north eastern states.I remember how nice it was, last winter, to look out and see these peppy little birds whose colorful eye patch of yellow would jump out like a snippet of sunshine!
I guess as much as I would like to hold on to these beautiful Fall days, for just a little longer, the arrival of these little sparrows helps me to accept that those winter winds that bring snowy days are not too far away!

Tina, I love your cute, wet squirrel picture! Also, the sparrows with that little bit of yellow around their eyes are fun, too. Thanks!

I have seen pictures of those colorful sparrows--but have never seen one before. I don't usually think of sparrows as pretty --but this little guy is gorgeous!!! Love the yellow!!! Have you had any snow yet??? We drove home from Buffalo tonight--and ran through some flurries near Cleveland/Columbus..

I just love these white-throated sparrows Tina. They really just pass through here on their way down. They have the sweetest song and I'm hearing it lately!
